SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Former Syracuse men's soccer goalkeeper Jeremy Vuolo recently signed with the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer (MLS). SUathletics.com recently caught up with Vuolo share his early experiences with the American club in his own words.
“I want to say a very big thank you to everyone back at Syracuse University,” Vuolo said. “I have been humbled by all the kind words and well wishes that I have received from our Syracuse soccer supporters, players and coaching staff. It has been somewhat of a whirlwind the last few weeks, but we have arrived in Cancun, Mexico for our first training camp in preparation for the 2012 MLS season. I thought I would provide the guys a little insight into life with the New York Red Bulls.”
Week 1:
“It was nice stepping out of the airport to warm weather and a shining sun—a good change from North Jersey where we have been training up to this point. No more long pants and layers of shirts for at least a few weeks! Our first training session was pretty tough, a lot of technical work for the goalkeepers and fitness for the field players with an 8-on-8 game to end the session. The Mexican sun is much hotter than New York's, so it may take a few days to get acclimated, but as long as I have got a bottle of water close by I'll survive.”
“I am looking forward to the training sessions for the rest of the week as we prepare to face FC Dallas on Monday for a friendly. A few of my buddies play with Dallas, so it will be good to see them and catch up after the match (if they can keep their spirits up after a Red Bull victory). Anyway, it has cooled down now, as the sun has set. Now, it is time for me to relax and put my feet up for the rest of the evening.”
Week 2:
“The week in Cancun has been a good one. We were meant to have our first official preseason match today against FC Dallas, but unfortunately the stadium pitch was flooded from overnight rains, so it was postponed until Tuesday afternoon. Instead, we enjoyed a wet and muddy training session, playing 7-on-7. Since this training session was impromptu, following the postponed game, there were very few supporters looking in through the surrounding fences. The locals have been out each day to watch us train, all hoping to get a chance to take a picture with Rafa Marquez.”
“I've been trying to enjoy Cancun as much as possible, although each day has seen a bit of rain. When it comes to training, I enjoy a bit of rain to stay cool and put a little zip on the ball. It is, however, a bit of a downer when I am working on my tan! I did manage to get on a jet ski last Thursday on our day off along with a few of the guys. It was a little weird to watch the Super Bowl (without commercials!) in a Mexican hotel room. “
