This Week: “Everyone comes to college to play against teams like Virginia and to play for teams like Syracuse. That's why everyone's here. It's going to be a great atmosphere.” Brian Megill on Sunday's affair in Charlottesville.
I could dazzle you with stats showing why this is annually the most exciting game on the lacrosse calendar. But the Carrier Dome crowds of 14,340 last year and 16,595 in 2009 speak for themselves. You already know this is the must see game of the regular season.
Remove the U, big boy ESPN has the coverage from Charlottesville Sunday at 4:30. Locally radio coverage starts at 4:00 on TK99. You'll hear from both John Desko and Luke Cometti on Orange Pregame.
Also This Week: It's time for the women's basketball Big East Tournament. The Orange earned the 12 seed and play in game one today against 13th seeded Providence at noon. But the nagging thought is one of a higher seed that got away. “Well obviously we're not happy with being 6-10,” Quentin Hillsman said after Monday's regular season ending loss at Villanova. “When you look at what we did throughout the season we just gave some away and I just wasn't happy with some of the games that we gave away. It's one of those things where you can't be happy being 6-10, but our kids fought every night and they played hard through this whole Big East season.”
A season that thanks to the Big East Tournament and further postseason eligibility afterwards is far from over. “That's important that our players don't feel the season's over,” Q said. “As long as we feel that way as a team and as a program I think we have a lot of basketball left to play.”
That basketball starts today at noon with game one of 15 to be played in Hartford. Should the Orange win, 5th seeded West Virginia awaits Saturday also at noon. A pair of wins would bring a matchup with 4th seeded Georgetown Sunday again at noon.
Tales from the Road(I-476 Edition): Have you driven on this thing before? I believe Sunday night en route to Villanova was only my second time traversing that stretch of road through Pennsylvania. Psychiatrists looking for business must have designed the thing because the concrete wall a foot off the left lane the entire length of the road is enough to loosen your connection with reality. It's almost a week later and my knuckles are still white.
Tastes from the Road: I'm now in Hartford for the Big East Tournament, so anyone that's read this column before knows that next week there will be an ode to fish tacos. However this week brings a nod to the go to food source for all Pennsylvanians, Wawa. If you're from the state to our south or know anyone that is, I can feel you nodding your heads in unison.
For those not in the know, Wawa is the convenience store of record in the Keystone State, and local Mecca for darn near any food item. The key is to visit with a Wawa veteran. Luckily for yours truly new Deputy AD Herman Frazier led the charge at Villanova, his local experience having previously worked at Temple most handy. Sure the man won an Olympic Gold Medal(1976 lead leg 4X400), but until you've seen Herm work the sandwich ordering machine at a Wawa, you don't know true greatness.
Higgo's Heroes: Kayla Alexander and Iasia Hemingway. We need not wait for the Big East Tournament games to start to fete the Orange members of the all conference team. Thursday both Kayla and Iasia were named 2nd Team All Big East. It's not the first rodeo for either when it comes to post season accolades. Kayla was named to the all Freshman team two years ago and was first team all league last season. Last year Iasia was honorable mention all Big East. Congratulations to both ladies on what is certainly a well deserved honor.
Next Broadcast: ESPN 97.7 is your place to be for women's hoops all Big East Tournament long starting today at noon against Providence. The Orange beat the Friars by 26 in the regular season. Sunday's lacrosse at Virginia can be heard in the same spot as well as on TK99. And of course Orange All Access has you covered for everything.
Should you ever be lacking an idea for something to do in Hartford, let me know @BrianHigginsSU.
