Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon served as an assistant coach for the United States' Under-23 women's soccer national team that won the Four Nations Competition held in LaManga, Spain. After a disappointing 2-1 loss in a hard-fought contest with England on Tuesday, the U.S. won the tournament with an emphatic 5-0 victory against Norway. His account of the final game follows:
"After watching England and Sweden tie earlier, we knew that a win would be enough to secure firstplace. Coach Waldrum did a great job of preparing the team and they came out on fire. It was 3-0 at the half and we dominated in every area. In the second half Norway pressed numbers forward but our defense handled everything that the Norwegians threw at them. It was a great win and a tremendous experience.
"It was nice to win the tournament and to see one of our players, Amber Brooks, be named as the tournament MVP."
