SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Kelly Saco hit a walk-off single to lead the No. 24 Syracuse University softball team (19-8) to a 6-5 victory against Canisius (4-18) in the team's second game in the Duel at the Dome on Saturday, March 24. With the win, Syracuse extends its winning streak to nine games.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and runners on second and third, Saco would hit a single up the middle to lift the Orange to its second win at the Carrier Dome.
Freshman Julie Wambold had two RBIs on a triple and home run. Senior Lisaira Daniels recorded an RBI, as well.
Trailing 1-0 early, SU would even the score in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Wambold smashed a ball over the left field fence and into the bleachers to tie the score.
An inning later, the Orange would take the lead. Wambold would record her second RBI of the night as she tripled home junior Emily Thompson. Saco then singled through the left side to score Wambold and give the host a 3-1 edge.
The visiting Golden Griffins would not pack it in. In the top of the fifth, Canisius would tally four runs, sparked by a three-run home run by Lizzy Gatto, to take a 5-3 advantage.
Daniels would smack a solo-home run to cut Canisius' lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth. Daniels' home run was her sixth on the season, a team-best.
Three straight walks to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning would load the bases for SU. Morgan Nandin would hit a ball to the shortstop, who would throw it home. The catcher would drop the ball and Carey-Leigh Thomas would tie the game and set the stage for Saco.
Senior Jenna Caira pitched the first five innings. She struck out eight and did not factor into the decision. Freshman Lindsay Taylor picked up her second win on the year, striking out three in two innings of work.
SU returns to action next weekend when the team opens up BIG EAST play on the road at St. John's. The two will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 31 and close the weekend with another game on Sunday, April 1.
