SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Field hockey 2012 incoming freshman Mailyn Nishiguchi has been named a recipient of the highly-prestigious Coronat Scholarship by the Syracuse University College of Arts & Sciences.
Nishiguchi, from Chula Vista, Calif., was chosen as a Coronat Scholar this week following a highly-competitive selection process for students with outstanding intellectual curiosity, accomplishment, and courage, who are committed to serving others. The program is for superbly accomplished incoming freshmen interested in majoring in the liberal arts.
“I am very honored and thankful for being acknowledged for all of the hard work I have put into my education,” Nishiguchi said.
Coronat Scholars have outstanding academic records, with a mean GPA of 4.15 and a mean SAT 1400 (based on 1600 combined math and verbal scores).
“Mailyn is very deserving of this prestigious scholarship,” Head Coach Ange Bradley said. “It is an honor to have her as part of our Syracuse field hockey family, and she will continue to represent us very well both athletically and academically.”
In addition to an outstanding academic record, Coronat Scholars are chosen on the basis of their records leadership and service activities.
Besides tuition, room and board, and expense benefits, honorees receive admission to the Renee Crown University Honors Program, mentoring for prominent national scholarships, including Rhodes and Marshall, full funding for one SU Abroad international study opportunity, and one summer of approved study, research, or volunteer work.
Nishiguchi led Bonita Vista High School to back-to-back Mesa League titles and was the league's Player of the Year in 2011 as the captain set a school record as a senior with 52 points on 18 goals and 16 assists. She finished her career with 101 points on 36 goals and 29 assists.
“In winning this award,” Nishiguchi said, “I am glad I could also bring recognition to the field hockey program as a student-athlete. Finding balance between academics and field hockey will continue to be my main goal, hoping to represent Syracuse University by excelling both on the field hockey pitch and in the classroom.”
