SU to Face Five NCAA Tournament Teams Next Season

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Five NCAA Tournament teams from last year, including the BIG EAST and Patriot League champions, headline the Orange men's soccer team's 2012 schedule. The slate, released by third-year head coach Ian McIntyre, also features the program's earliest season opener in history, as well as three opponents Syracuse has never faced before.

Colgate, Louisville, Rutgers, St. John's, and USF all earned berths in last year's NCAA Championship and are featured on this year's schedule. Louisville and USF each advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals.

Syracuse opens its regular season and home schedule against Albany on Aug. 24, marking the earliest start to a men's soccer season in program history. The Orange concludes the month of August with a road contest at Binghamton on Aug. 28, before returning home to the SU Soccer Stadium on Aug. 31 to face Niagara.

After hosting 2011 Patriot League champ, Colgate, on Sept. 3, Syracuse hits the road for two non-conference tournaments. The Orange is set to compete in the Mayor's Cup, which SU won in 2008, in Oneonta, N.Y. The Orange will take on NJIT on Sept. 7 and St. Bonaventure on Sept. 9. The team will also participate in the UNLV Nike Invitational in Las Vegas the following weekend. The Orange plays host UNLV for the first time in men's soccer on Sept. 14, and duels with Cal State Fullerton Sept. 16.

BIG EAST Conference play begins with the Orange hosting Seton Hall on Sept. 22. The team then travels to Amherst, Mass. for a clash with Massachusetts in its final non-conference game of the year Sept. 15.

Coach McIntyre's squad will wraps up September with a road date at Cincinnati on Sept. 29, before hosting consecutive conference matches versus Rutgers (Oct. 3) and Louisville (Oct. 6). In its third consecutive game against a squad that qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season, SU travels to USF on Oct. 13.

The Orange takes on Villanova on the road on Oct. 17. In its home finale, SU will face DePaul on Oct. 20. Syracuse completes the regular season with a road match against defending conference champion St. John's on Oct. 25.
The 2012 BIG EAST Championship begins with first-round and quarterfinal matches at campus sites on Oct. 31 and Nov. 3, respectively. The conference tournament semifinals and championship match will again take place at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J. The semifinals are scheduled for Nov. 9 with the championship match slated for Nov. 11.
