SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The two-time defending BIG EAST Champion Syracuse field hockey team will face six NCAA Tournament teams this fall as head coach Ange Bradley has announced the Orange's 2012 schedule.
Syracuse will play a challenging 18-game schedule against elite competition from across the country. The Orange will host a eight-game home slate at J.S. Coyne Stadium, including matches with 2011 Final Four participants North Carolina (Sept. 1) and Connecticut (Oct. 27).
The Orange will face six of the 15 other NCAA Tournament teams from 2011 (UNC, UConn, New Hampshire, Ohio, Princeton and Stanford) and a total of eight teams that have made the NCAAs at least once in the last two seasons (Massachusetts and Stanford in 2010).
Seven of SU's 18 regular season opponents were ranked in the top 20 of the final 2011 Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll (No. 1 UNC, No. 5 UConn, No. 9 UNH, No. 10 Stanford, No. 13 Boston University, No. 19 Boston College and No. 20 Ohio), while three more were receiving votes (Yale, Louisville and Princeton).
Syracuse is coming off one of the most successful seasons in program history, going 19-4 on the way to its sixth BIG EAST title and fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. With the departure of four seniors from 2011, Bradley's 2012 squad will be led by returning All-Americans Liz McInerney and captain Kelsey Millman, while a talented freshmen class of eight joins the ranks.
After three preseason scrimmages at home vs. Albany (8/16) and on the road at Drexel (8/18) and Lafayette (8/21), the Orange will open the regular season at Monmouth on Aug. 24 before hosting the home opener on Sunday, Aug. 26 against Ohio at 1 p.m.
On Saturday, Sept. 1, SU hosts the 2009 National Champion Tar Heels in a 1 p.m. contest at Coyne Stadium. UNC has been to three-straight Final Fours, finishing as national runner-up the last two seasons.
Following a two-game road trip to New England to face New Hampshire (9/7) and Boston University (9/9), the Orange returns home to host Villanova in the BIG EAST opener on Sept. 14 and Kent State on Sept. 16.
A two-game road swing to the Garden State against Rutgers (Sept. 21) and Princeton (Sept. 23) precedes a home weekend for SU against Louisville (9/29) and Yale (9/30).

The regular season will close with a BIG EAST Championship rematch from a seasons ago with UConn on Oct. 27 at Coyne Stadium.
The Orange will seek its third-straight BIG EAST Championship title Nov. 2-4 at Trager Stadium in Louisville, Ky.
The 2012 NCAA Championship first and second rounds will be played at campus sites Nov. 10-11 and the Final Four will be Nov. 16-18 in Norfolk, Va. on the campus of Old Dominion.
