Former Syracuse star Shannon Taylor will be representing the Red, White & Blue in London this summer as she was named to the USA Field Hockey Olympic Team by Head Coach Lee Bodimeade on Monday.
Taylor, who has been a member of the U.S. National Team since 2010, will become the first Syracuse field hockey alumna to be an Olympian. She is one of 16 players from the 25-member U.S. National Team selected by Bodimeade and his staff for the Olympic Games.
Taylor will make her Olympic debut after being the USA's leading scorer last year and helped the team punch its ticket for London by scoring a goal in its 4-2 victory against Argentina in the finals of the Pan American Games on Oct. 28.
“I am so proud of Shannon and so happy to see her achieve and live her dream of playing for the U.S. in the Olympics,” SU head coach Ange Bradley said. “I have enjoyed watching her develop into an elite athlete and admire her work ethic, dedication and belief in her dream. I am honored to have had the opportunity to coach her in the early stages of her development.”
In just one season playing for the Orange after transferring from Richmond, Taylor became one of the most-decorated players in program history in 2008. The senior had 79 points on 31 goals and 17 assists, including six game-winning goals as she led the Orange to a 22-2 record and the Final Four. She was a finalist for the Honda Broderick Award as well as being named First-Team All-American, BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Player, and First-Team All-BIG EAST.
The U.S. will play in a pool made up of No. 2 Argentina, No. 2 Germany, No. 6 New Zealand, No. 7 Australia and No. 12 South Africa. The Americans' first match will be against Germany on Sunday, July 29. After pool play concludes on Aug. 6, semifinal matches will be played on Aug. 8 and the gold-medal match takes place on Aug. 10.
Taylor and the U.S. squad will begin final preparation for the London Games on June 18 with the start of a four-game series against Argentina in Virginia. Matches will be played at the University of Virginia, Old Dominion University and the National Training Center in Virginia Beach.
Taylor joined the Senior Women's National Team in 2010 after playing on the Development Team in 2009. She played on the Pan-American Games winning USA squad as well as the second-place Champions Challenge team, both in 2011. Taylor has a total of 56 international caps.
She recently completed play at USA Field Hockey's High Performance National Championship in College Park, Md. Taylor was the tournament's leading scorer with eight goals, playing for the North team along with three current SU players.
Taylor joins men's basketball head coach Jim Boeheim as Orange alumni with their tickets officially punched for the Olympic Games. Boeheim will once again be an assistant coach on Mike Krzyzewski's staff that won gold in Beijing in 2008. Carmelo Anthony, who was a member of that 2008 winning team, is one of 18 finalists for the Olympic men's basketball squad that will officially be announced in the coming weeks.
