SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse men's soccer program will welcome back one of the most successful teams in school history during the weekend of Friday, Aug. 31 to Sunday, Sept. 2. Members of SU's 1982 BIG EAST Championship team will be back on campus and make two appearances to celebrate the 30th anniversary of that historic season.
Â
The legendary side will be recognized at halftime of the Aug. 31 men's soccer match between Syracuse and Niagara. Start time is 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. The following day (Sept. 1), the 1982 Orange will be honored at the Carrier Dome during the football team's noon opener against Northwestern.
Coached by Alden Shattuck, and led by a defense that gave up just 10 goals all season, the 1982 Orange set a school record with 17 victories en route to the inaugural BIG EAST Conference tournament title. Among squad's triumphs was an epic 1-0 decision against Boston College in the league championship game. The match lasted six overtimes and remains the longest game in BIG EAST soccer history (160:26).
