Full Game Recap
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse University incoming freshmen Alex Bono and Stefanos Stamoulacatos made the most of their first Major League Soccer (MLS) experience. The pair trained with the New England Revolution last week, then took the Gillette Stadium pitch for the franchise's reserve squad and helped the hosts secure a 1-1 draw against the New York Red Bulls Reserves Sunday night.
Bono started in goal for New England and made four saves in the contest, including three in the opening half to keep the match scoreless at the break. Stamoulacatos saw action as a field player.
In the second half, both sides tallied once to produce the 1-1 result. Quincy Amarikwa beat Bono in the 52nd minute to give New York the lead. Sainey Nyassi netted the equalizer in the 77th minute for the Revolution.
For Bono, limiting a group of pros to one goal and playing in an NFL venue is an experience he believes will benefit him as he starts his college career.
“I was nervous at the start,” Bono said. “But after the first few minutes I settled down and I think adjusted well to the game. This (my performance) is something I can build off of going into the fall season at Syracuse.”
Bono credited his work with Revolution keeper Matt Reis and midfielder Shalrie Joseph for preparing him for the level of skill he saw Sunday.
“The game is much more physical,” Bono said. “Players are stronger with the ball, but training with those guys and the rest of the Revs beforehand, as well as my experience with the (U.S.) national team, really helped.”
In a unique twist, Bono's counterpart in Sunday's match was former Orange goalie Jeremy Vuolo. Vuolo, who owns a 1-2-2 record in five reserve games this season, made three saves for the Red Bulls. He also gave Bono some advice after the match.
“He told me to play with confidence,” Bono said. “Syracuse University is a great place. Listen to the coaches. They know what they're talking about and they have the program headed in the right direction.”
