Hahnefeldt Leads SU Preseason Honorees

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Laura Hahnefeldt has been named Preseason BIG EAST Co-Defensive Player of the Year, headlining four Orange to be honored as the conference announced its field hockey preseason awards and poll on Tuesday.
Joining Hahnefeldt on the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team are teammates Lauren Brooks, Leonie Geyer and Iona Holloway. Geyer was one of five unanimous selections on the 12-member team.
Syracuse, the two-time defending BIG EAST Tournament Champion, was picked to finish second in the Preseason Coaches' Poll, receiving two first-place votes and 32 total points.
Connecticut was picked to finish first in the coaches' poll, receiving four first-place votes and 34 total points, two more than the Orange. Louisville was selected third with one first-place vote and 27 total points. Rutgers was selected fourth, while Villanova, Providence and Georgetown were selected for spots five, six and seven, respectively.
Hahnefeldt, a junior back for head coach Ange Bradley, shares the conference's top defensive preseason honor with UConn goalkeeper Sarah Mansfield. The Huskies' Marie Elena Bolles was named the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.
Hahnefeldt (Hamburg, Germany) tallied five points on one goal and three assists in 2011 on her way to being named Longstreth/NFHCA All-Region First Team after earning the same honor in 2010 in addition to the freshmen earning second-team All-America honors.
Geyer (Neuss, Germany), a junior midfielder, had 30 points on 10 goals and 10 assists in 2011, earning Longstreth/NFHCA All-Region Second Team honors. She was named first-team All-Region as a freshman in 2010 when she tallied 22 points on five goals and 12 assists.
Brooks (Lancaster, Pa.), a sophomore forward, had 11 points on four goals and three assists in her rookie campaign in 2011. She was named BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Player after scoring a goal in Syracuse's 3-0 semifinal win vs. Villanova and again in the Orange's 3-2 championship game victory vs. UConn.
Holloway (Glasgow, Scotland), a senior back, tallied nine points on four goals and one assist. She was named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team which included a goal in the semifinal win vs. Villanova. Hollaway and Hahnefeldt helped anchor a defense that ranked fifth in the nation in goals against average (1.05).
The Orange begins preseason play on Thursday with a scrimmage vs. Albany at 1 p.m. at Coyne Stadium. The regular season kicks off on Aug. 24 at Monmouth (1 p.m.), while the home opener will be on Sunday, Aug. 26 at 1 p.m. against Ohio.
BIG EAST competition begins for SU on Sept. 14 vs. Villanova. The seven BIG EAST field hockey teams play a six-game regular season league schedule. The BIG EAST Championship will be hosted by Louisville at Trager Stadium November 2-4. The top four teams in regular season conference play will advance, with the Champion receiving the league's automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA Field Hockey Championship.
