NFHCA Preseason Poll
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse field hockey team will open the 2012 season ranked No. 7 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Preseason Poll released this week by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.
The two-time defending BIG EAST Champion Orange has now been ranked in the top 10 for 43 consecutive weeks, dating back to Aug. 28, 2008.
Ange Bradley's team, which has participated in four straight NCAA Tournaments, finished the 2011 season ranked No. 3 in the final poll after spending nine out of 11 weeks at No. 5, including last season's preseason poll.
SU will face a challenging schedule in 2012. Eight of the Orange's regular season opponents are ranked in the top 25 of the preseason NFHCA poll: No. 2 North Carolina (H-9/1), No. 4 Princeton (A-9/23), No. 6 Connecticut (H-10/27), No. 11 Stanford (N-10/12), No. 14 Boston University (A-9/9), No. 17 Boston College (H-10/21), No. 18 New Hampshire (A-9/7) and No. 23 Louisville (H-9/29).
The Orange returns a strong nucleus from its 19-4 squad from a season ago, including two All-Americans in graduate student midfielder Liz McInerney and senior forward Kelsey Millman, and the nation's active leader in save percentage in senior goalkeeper Leann Stiver.
Syracuse opens the 2012 regular season this weekend with a road game at Monmouth on Friday at 1 p.m. and the home opener at J.S. Coyne Stadium against Ohio on Sunday at 1 p.m. Live video and stats will be available for both games at SUAthletics.com.
