BIG EAST Release
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Syracuse field hockey senior captain Kelsey Millman was recognized for her outstanding nine-point opening weekend for the No. 7 Orange (2-0) by being named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. Junior back Laura Hahnefeldt was also honored as she was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll.
It is the third career BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week award for Millman. She took home the honor twice as a junior in 2011, Oct. 3 and Oct. 17, on her way to being named NFHCA All-American and first-team All-BIG EAST. For Hahnefeldt, it is the third time in her career she has won a conference weekly award, and first since her freshman season in 2010 when she was named Defensive Player of the Week once and to the honor roll once.
A native of Center Valley, Pa., Millman picked up right where she left off in 2011 when she tied teammate Heather Susek for the conference goal-scoring crown by tallying three goals and three assists over two games on the 2012 season's opening weekend.
Millman scored twice and added a pair of assists in the Orange's 8-1 opening win at Monmouth on Friday and added another goal and an assist in SU's home-opener, a 6-0 win vs. Ohio on Sunday.
Hahnefeldt, the BIG EAST Preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year, was the key figure in a Syracuse defense that allowed just one goal over two games and limited the opposition to just 12 total shots and six shots on goal. The Hamburg, Germany native added an assist in Sunday's shutout victory over Ohio that ran SU's home winning streak to 29 games.
The seventh-ranked Orange hosts No. 2 North Carolina on Saturday at J.S. Coyne Stadium in a clash of top 10 teams at 1 p.m.
