Head coach and player interviews
The women's soccer squad is the first Syracuse team to take to take the practice field in preparation for the 2012 season. The Orange reported to campus on Thursday, Aug. 2. The team took part in conditioning drills on Friday morning before taking the field for the first time on Friday afternoon at Hookway Field.
"Right now we are in an evaluation phase," said fifth-year head coach Phil Wheddon. "The players have been working out all summer, playing on different teams, gaining different experiences. We're happy with the way things went (at the first practice)."
Syracuse recorded its highest win total since 2007 last season and registered six BIG EAST victories, the most since 1998 and the second-highest total in school history. While the Orange accomplished its goal of making it to the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 2005, the team is not satisfied with last year's performance.
"Success is relative," Wheddon said. "It was a more successful season than Syracuse has had in the past but still not where we want to be."
The Orange will open the season on August 19 at Colgate before hosting Albany (Aug. 24) and Washington (Aug. 26) at the SU Soccer Stadium.
