SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse women's rower and 2012 Olympic silver medalist Natalie Mastracci will compete with the Orange for the 2012-13 season after a two-year stint with the Canadian National Team.
The Thorold, Ontario native returns to Syracuse to complete her degree and row for the Orange after spending the last two years training with the Canadian National Team. Mastracci won a silver medal with Team Canada at the 2011 World Championships before taking silver this summer at the London Olympic Games.
In her three previous seasons rowing for Syracuse (2007-10), Mastracci was a member of the varsity eight for all three seasons and was named CRCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region each year.
Mastracci rejoins an Orange crew coming off its second season under Moore in which it showed dramatic improvement, winning its first BIG EAST crown in a varsity race since 2005 with the varsity four, and finished second in every other point-scoring race. Syracuse finished the season ranked No. 20 in the CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll, its first national ranking in seven years.
Moore returns a strong nucleus in 2012-13, including six of eight rowers from the varsity eight, as well as all four rowers and coxswain from the varsity four, in addition to welcoming a talented freshmen class of eight to the ranks.
Mastracci combined with Carmelo Anthony to represent Syracuse as its only current or former athletes to win medals at the London Olympics.
Syracuse women's rowing kicks off its fall season on Oct. 13 in Rochester at the Head of the Genesee. It hosts its lone home regatta of the season on Saturday, Nov. 3 with the Syracuse Invitational at the James A. Ten Eyck Boathouse on the Onondaga River Outlet near Long Branch Park.
