Recap: Syracuse 1, UNC 0 OT
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - After leading a defense that shut out No. 2 North Carolina for the first time since 2009, No. 7 Syracuse field hockey's Iona Holloway was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week by the conference office on Monday. Emma Russell, who scored the game-winning goal in overtime for the Orange in its 1-0 victory over the Tar Heels, was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll.
It is the third career Defensive Player of the Week award for Holloway after winning the honor once each in 2010 and 2011. The senior defensive forced several turnovers in Saturday's victory over the Tar Heels, including several key tackles in the circle. The Glasgow, Scotland native was also instrumental on the defensive corner unit, thwarting seven UNC penalty corners, including one in overtime.
Russell ended the scoreless draw by knocking a shot from the right side of the circle inside the right post off a penalty corner with 9:03 remaining in the overtime period. It was the rookie from Enniskerry, Ireland's second goal in three career games and her first BIG EAST weekly honor.
North Carolina is the highest-ranked opponent Syracuse has defeated since a 2-1 victory at No. 1 Maryland in 2008. The victory also extends the Orange's home winning streak to 30 games.
Syracuse heads to New England for a pair of games next weekend, at New Hampshire on Friday (7 p.m.) and against Boston University at Harvard's Jordan Field on Sunday (11 a.m.).
