SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Following its dramatic 1-0 overtime victory against then-No. 2 North Carolina on Saturday, Syracuse field hockey (3-0) has climbed to a No. 2 ranking in this week's Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll. It is the Orange's highest ranking since being No. 1 on Oct. 14, 2008.
After ranking No. 7 in the NFHCA preseason poll, released on Aug. 21, Ange Bradley's Syracuse team won its opener at Monmouth, 8-1, shut out Ohio in its home opener, 6-0, before Emma Russell's goal with 9:03 left in overtime gave the Orange its highest win over a ranked opponent in four years. It was also the first time the Tar Heels had been shut out since 2009.
The Orange has now been ranked in the top 10 of the NFHCA poll for 44-straight weeks, dating back to Aug. 28, 2008. Last season, SU debuted at No. 5 in the poll and held that position for nine of 11 weeks before finishing the season ranked No. 3 in the final poll.
There were several shake-ups in the top 10 between the 2012 preseason poll and Tuesday's poll as eight different teams received first-place votes. While Syracuse climbed from No. 7 to No. 2 with 671 points and received seven first-place votes, the team it defeated on Saturday, North Carolina (3-1), actually climbed from No. 2 to No. 1, receiving 697 points and eight first-place votes.
Defending champ Maryland (3-1) fell from No. 1 to No. 3 (six first-place votes), while Princeton (2-0) stayed at No. 4 despite garnering the most first-place votes (10).
The last time the Orange ranked No. 2 or better was when it reached No. 1 for the first time in program history on Oct. 14, 2008. It ranked No. 2 for the three weeks prior to that poll.
Syracuse faces a challenging road trip to New England this weekend, facing No. 24 New Hampshire (1-2) on Friday in Durham, N.H. (5 p.m.) and then taking on No. 12 Boston University (4-0) on Sunday at 11 a.m. at Harvard's Jordan Field. The Orange returns to Coyne Stadium on Friday, Sept. 14 to open BIG EAST play against Villanova at 4 p.m.
