SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse women's basketball (14-1, 2-0) cracked the USA TODAY Top 25 Coaches Poll on Tuesday, ranking No. 23 in the country, the Orange's first national ranking since Jan. 31, 2011.
Tied for its best start after 15 games in program history with 2009-10 when it started 15-1, the Orange's No. 23 ranking in the coaches poll is its first since being No. 25 on Jan. 31, 2011 and its highest since ranking No. 23 on Dec. 29, 2009.
The Orange garnered a season-best 83 points this week, leaping ahead of No. 24 Florida State (13-3, 81 points) and No. 25 Colorado (13-2, 67 points). Last week's No. 23 and No. 25 teams, Nebraska (12-5) and Miami (12-4) dropped out of this week's top 25.
The Orange received 39 points in this weeks Associated Press Top 25 Poll, also a season-high, placing it just out of the poll as the first "others receiving votes" team. Syracuse held that spot in last week's coaches poll with 44 points before making the jump this week.
The highest Syracuse has ever ranked in the coaches poll is No. 22, a spot it has claimed twice, on Jan. 21, 2008 and Dec. 15, 2009.
The Orange is currently on a seven-game winning streak, most recently defeating Marquette (92-79) and Georgetown (86-56) to start BIG EAST play. Syracuse hosts DePaul (13-4, 2-1) on Tuesday in a 7 p.m. tip at the Carrier Dome. The game will be televised in New York State on Time Warner Cable Sports and in Chicago on LPTV.
