SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Orange head coach Ian McIntyre announced two additions to the men's soccer program on Wednesday, Jan. 16. Forward Alex Halis and midfielder Mike Koegel enrolled at Syracuse University earlier this month and will participate in spring practice. Both are freshmen with four years of eligibility remaining.
Â
"We are delighted to welcome Mike and Alex to our program this spring and we are looking forward to quickly integrating them both into our young squad," McIntyre said.
Halis, a native of Brampton, Ontario, is a member of the Canadian youth national program. He competed for Team Canada at the 2011 U-17 World Cup and is part of the U-20 pool for this year's World Cup qualifying. Halis played club soccer for FC Sigma.
Â
"Alex is an exciting, skillful player who is comfortable playing in a number of different attacking roles," McIntyre said. "He is a talented player who I have enjoyed watching for a number of years. He will immediately provide our team a new threat in the final third of the field."
Â
At Syracuse, Koegel reunites with former Empire United club teammates Alex Bono, Ben Ramin and Stefanos Stamoulacatos. Koegel played scholastically at nearby Chittenango High School. He is listed as the No. 3 prospect in New York by TopDrawerSoccer.com and the website ranks him among the top 150 prospects nationally.
Â
"Our program is built upon our ability to keep the best local talent home and Mike is a quality player and a fantastic young man who has grown up supporting Syracuse," McIntyre said. "Mike is a strong, physical player with good technique and I look forward to watching him make the transition to the college game."
Â
The Orange begins spring practice later this month and is coming off its most successful season to date. The Orange went 14-6-1 last fall and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament before being eliminated in penalty kicks by eventual national runner-up Georgetown.
