SYRACUSE, NY - Freshmen Brianna Butler and Brittney Sykes each scored 14 points to lead No. 24 Syracuse women's basketball to a 65-34 victory vs. Seton Hall at the Carrier Dome on Wednesday.
The Orange (17-3, 5-2 BIG EAST) held the Pirates (8-13, 3-5 BIG EAST) to the second fewest points ever allowed by SU in a BIG EAST game. In the 1998-89 season, Syracuse held then conference-foe, No. 21/22 Boston College, to only 30 points in a 73-30 win.
"Seton Hall is a very physical basketball team," said head coach Quentin Hillsman. "They play a tough brand of basketball. They pushed the tempo and really made plays and our players just did a very good job at responding. I thought that overall our group effort was very good."
Both Kayla Alexander and Elashier Hall recorded double-doubles against the Pirates. Alexander scored 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Hall had 10 points and 14 boards for her second double-double of the season. Her 14 rebounds were not only a team-high but were also tied her career-high.
Syracuse controlled the paint, out-scoring Seton Hall, 28-18, and out-rebounded the Pirates, 52-35. The Orange held 24-5 advantage in second-chance points, thanks to 17 offensive rebounds.
The Orange put together a 15-0 run over a 5:03 span early in the second half to blow open what was a nine-point Orange lead at halftime. Sykes contributed nine in the run to give SU a 47-21 lead.
The 15-0 run was part of a 21-4 run for the Orange over the first eight minutes of the second half as SU shot 54.2 percent (13-24) in the second period, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range, after shooting 30.3 percent (10-33) in the first 20 minutes.
The Syracuse defense held the Pirates to 22 percent (13-59) shooting overall, including 1-of-15 from behind the arc.
In the first opening 10 minutes of the contest, the Orange and Pirates traded baskets, until back-to-back jumpers by Shakeya Leary's sparked a 14-2 run for SU. The lead changed eight times in the first 8:36 minutes of play until Leary's first jump shot was good, which gave SU the lead for the remainder of the game.
A jump shot by Alexander with 47 seconds left in the first half gave the Orange its final points of the half and its largest lead, 26-14. After a three by Seton Hall, the Orange went into the locker room with a 26-17 lead. Syracuse held the Pirates to 20 percent shooting in the first half and percent overall.
The Orange hosts Providence on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Carrier Dome.
