LAST TIME OUT
Rookie forward Emil Ekblom continued to have the hot hand, scoring two goals against the Eagles, but the Orange's comeback bid fell short in a 3-2 defeat to Boston College on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at the Newton Campus Field.
Â
After BC recorded two early goals, Ekblom scored in the 15th and 53rd minutes to draw SU even. Boston College notched the game-winner in the 58th minute and staved off several Orange opportunities in the closing minutes to emerge victorious.
Â
Defender Jordan Murrell was credited with his team-best sixth assist in the loss.
Â
ELECTRIC EKBLOM
Ekblom leads the ACC and is tied for eighth in the nation with eight goals. His 19 points are tops in the conference as well.
Against NC State and Boston College, he combined for 11 points on five goals and one assist. Ekblom posted SU's first hat trick since 2008 and set an SU Soccer Stadium record with seven points (three goals, one assist) against the Wolfpack.
Â
Following his performance against NC State, Ekblom was named the Disney Soccer/NSCAA Division I Men's Player of the Week and the ECAC co-Offensive Player of the Week. He also earned spots on the TopDrawerSoccer.com and College Soccer News National Teams of the week.
Â
Ekblom has tallied the fourth-most goals by an SU freshman in program history. He is four goals shy of tying Mark DiMonte's rookie record of 12 goals during the 1984 season.
Â
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
Pittsburgh owns a 0-6-3 record, including a 0-5-1 mark in ACC competition this season.
Â
Ryan Meyers leads the Pitt offense with four points on one goal and two assists. Chu Chu Onyeukwu, Zane Meehan and Kevin Murray have also tallied goals for the Panthers. Pittsburgh goalkeeper Dan Lynd has played in all nine games in 2013. He's collected 47 saves with a 1.62 goals-against average.
Â
Joe Luxbacher is in his 30th season as head coach in the Steel City. The two-time BIG EAST Coach of the Year, Luxbacher has directed the Panthers to six 10-win seasons and eight BIG EAST Tournament appearances in his tenure.
SERIES HISTORY
Saturday's match represents the 19th meeting between Syracuse and Pittsburgh. The Panthers own an 8-7-3 series advantage, while the last five meetings have been even at 2-2-1. Three of the last five matchups have gone to overtime.
Â
SU's last win in the series was on Sept. 21, 2007 when Hansen Woodruff registered two goals to lead the Orange to a 2-0 victory.
