NEWTON, Mass. – Syracuse senior Brittany Anghel became the second player in school history to record 300 career saves in the Orange's 2-1 setback in double overtime at Boston College. Syracuse finishes the season with a 7-11-1 record and a 3-9-1 mark in its inaugural season in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
Anghel posted six saves and finishes her career with 303. She joins Eliza Bennett-Hattan as the only goalkeepers in school history to record 300 or more saves in their career. Anghel is Syracuse's all-time leader in wins and shutouts.
The first half was a defensive battle but Boston College (10-8-1) was able to take advantage of an early scoring chance when McKenzie Meehan scored her 16th goal of the season on an assists from Patrice Vettori and Alex Johnson.
"We got down early and had to come back," said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. "It took us most of the first half to get used to playing on the surface and we didn't play with composure. We talked about it at halftime and in the second half we played our style. We moved the ball early and were very dangerous and had a chance to score more goals."
The Orange evened the score in the 72nd minute when freshman Maddie Damm tallied her second goal of the season. SU's defense withstood 11 shots and successfully defended against six Boston College corner kicks in the second half as the game went into overtime.
Syracuse was forced to play the final 43 seconds of the first overtime period and the second extra session a man down after a red card was issued in the 99th minute. The Eagles were awarded a direct kick after the red card was issued, but Anghel punched it out for the save to keep the game tied.
Boston College netted the game winner in the 103rd minute when Meehan scored her second goal of the season and seventh game-winning goal of the year on an assist from Stephanie McCaffrey.
"Our nemesis all year has been getting good opportunities to score and not being able to convert our chances," Wheddon said. "Moving forward that has to be our focus because we have the right athletes and we have the right system."
The game was the final collegiate contest for Syracuse's seniors, including Anghel, Kayla Afonso, Rachel Blum, Jackie Moriarty and Cecilia Borgstrom.
"We really wanted to win this game for the seniors," Wheddon said. "I can't say enough about what they have meant to our program.
"I'm very proud of the entire team. They came together and fought hard in their first season in the ACC. They gained respect from coaches across the league for being organized and being in every single game."
