SYRACUSE, N.Y- Junior Chris Makowski (Quakertown, Pa.) of the men's soccer team and senior Brittney Krebs (Marathon, N.Y.) of the women's ice hockey squad have been chosen to represent Syracuse University as the Scholar-Athletes of the Week for Oct. 7, 2013.
A three-year starter, Makowski was named the clubs most valuable player last season as part of a defensive unit that recorded 12 shutouts, the third-most in the nation last year. This season, Makowski is leading the squad in minutes played for the second year in a row. He tallied his second career assist in a 2-0 win over Hartwick just two games into the season, and following wins over then No. 12 Connecticut and conference-foe Duke, Makowski earned a spot on the College Soccer News National Team of the Week. The junior captain is a two-time member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll. Makowski is majoring in health and physical education in the School of Education.
Krebs, an assistant captain, has already matched her goal output from last season with a tally against New Hampshire in the second game of the season. She also recorded an assist in SU's upset, season-opening win at No. 10 Northeastern. Krebs is coming off a junior-year campaign in which she led the team with 44 blocks and finished second among defenders with 13 assists while being named to the College Hockey America All-Tournament Team. A standout in the classroom as well, Krebs has been recognized on the CHA's All-Academic Team each of the past three seasons and on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in all of her semesters at SU. Krebs is majoring in health and exercise science in the School of Education.
Makowski and the men's soccer team (8-3, 2-3 ACC) look to extend its two-game win streak at Boston College on Tuesday, Oct. 8 and at home against Pittsburgh on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. Krebs and the women's ice hockey team (1-1) will make their home debut on Friday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. versus nationally ranked No. 3 Clarkson, then make the return trip to Potsdam the following day for a 4 p.m. tilt.
