SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Three members of the Syracuse women's soccer team have been named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District team announced by the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA). Senior Brittany Anghel and sophomores Jackie Firenze and Taylor Haenlin were named to the 12-member squad. The Orange's three selections were the most for any school in the district.
Anghel, who is making her second consecutive appearance on the All-District squad, ends her career as one of the top goalkeepers in school history. She owns the school records for victories (28) and shutouts (21). Anghel became the second goalkeeper in program history to record 300 saves, finishing with 303 in her career. She was a 2013 Senior CLASS award nominee and has been on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester at SU. Anghel is majoring in health an exercise science and nutrition.
Firenze posted seven points this season on two goals and a career-high three assists. She was a member of the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team last season after finishing the year with eight points on four goals. Firenze, a health and physical education major, is a two-time member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll.
Haenlin started all 19 games on defense for the Orange in 2013. She helped Syracuse post four shutouts this season. In addition, she recorded the first goal of her career in Syracuse's double overtime win at North Carolina State to go along with one assist. A biology and exercise science major, Haenlin is a two-time member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll.
The trio will now go on the national ballot for Academic All-Americans. CoSIDA selects Academic All-America teams in 12 programs. The nominee must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) in both undergraduate and graduate work. He/she must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution (true freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible athletic transfers are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at the institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games.
