PHILADELPHIA - Syracuse women's rowing won four out of five races, including the varsity eight to win the Orange Challenge Cup vs. Pennsylvania and Northeastern on the Schuylkill River Saturday in Philadelphia.
The Orange lays claim to the Orange Challenge Cup for the first time since 2009 and its seventh time overall in the race between SU, the Quakers and Huskies that has been contested annually since 1979.
"I am unbelievably proud of the team for going down to the Philly race course and handle the turn in the course and fast tailwind conditions against good competition," head coach Justin Moore said. "We caught a crab about 15 strokes into the race and fell behind about six to seven seats. The rhythm they responded with was an angry and very powerful rhythm. From the 200-meter to the 700-meter mark through the turn, I have not seen the crew row that powerfully and that composed."
In the V8 race between crews all receiving votes in the latest CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll, the Orange proved too strong down the stretch, winning in a time of 6:27.8, 4.6 seconds ahead of second-place Penn (6:32.4) and 8.1 ticks ahead of third-place Northeastern (6:35.9).
Moore's V8 consisted of the same lineup that recorded an open water victory last weekend at Boston University: Kristina Herb (cox), Holly Johnston (stroke), Natalie Mastracci (7), Carmen Failla (6), Emma Basher (5), Georgia Hamilton (4), Amy Ludovici (3), Maggie McCrudden (2) and Anna Kaszycki (bow).
Syracuse's second varsity eight rowed to victory in a time of 6:42.0, a 6.2 second advantage over Northeastern (6:48.2) in second and 8.9 ahead of Penn (6:50.9) in third.
SU also claimed victory in the varsity four event, winning in a time 7:24.1, while Penn was second in 7:33.9 and Northeastern third in 7:36.2. The Orange's V4B also won its race, covering the 2,000 meters in 7:42.6, while Penn's "B" boat was 7:50.0 and its "C" was 8:03.1.
"The day started with our V4B coming through the 1,000-meter, where the other boats were watching, with an open-water lead on Penn," Moore said. "Our 4A and 2V8 then rowed great races to win as well. When that happens, the confidence builds for everyone throughout the day. I give credit to the 4B for starting the day the right way against good Penn and Northeastern crews."
The Quakers prevented an Orange sweep by winning the third varsity eight in 6:54.1. Syracuse finished second in 7:00.0 and Northeastern was third in 7:09.8.
After no racing next weekend, the Orange returns to action on Saturday, April 20 when it hosts its lone home regatta of the season at the James A. Ten Eyck Boathouse, the O'Leary Cup vs. Radcliffe-Harvard and Dartmouth.
