CRCA All-Region Teams
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -Â Syracuse rowers Natalie Mastracci and Carmen Failla were named Mid-Atlantic All-Region by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA). Both seniors, Mastracci was named to the first team, while Failla earned second team honors.
Â
The duo led head coach Justin Moore's Orange varsity eight to a second-place finish in the varsity eight at the BIG EAST Championship, victories at the Orange Challenge Cup and Kittell Cup, and a No. 19 final ranking in the CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll, the program's highest ranking in eight years.
Â
Mastracci has earned All-Region honors for all four years she rowed at Syracuse. She was second team in 2008 and 2009 before being named first team in 2010. This is Failla's first All-Region honor.
Â
Mastracci returned to Syracuse for her senior season after spending the previous two years with the Canadian National Team. The Thorold, Ontario native won a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics in the women's eight. She rowed in the seven seat for the Orange varsity eight throughout the spring season before moving to the stroke seat for the BIG EAST Championship. She was named All-BIG EAST First Team at the conclusion of the regatta. At the 'Cuse Awards on April 28, Mastracci was a nominee for Female Athlete of the Year and the Soladay Award.
Â
Failla, a fifth-year senior from Bedford, England, captained SU to back-to-back BIG EAST Championship second-place finishes in the V8 in 2012 and 2013. She rowed in the six seat for the V8 throughout the 2013 season before moving to the seven seat for the BIG EAST Championship. She was named All-BIG EAST Second Team at the championship. Failla was named the women's rowing 'Cuse Award winner at the seventh annual awards.
Â
The CRCA's All-Region teams recognize the outstanding performances of rowers and coxswains from each of the five regions, organized into first and second-team selections. Nominated student-athletes are evaluated on the strength of their team's regional finish, coaches' recommendations and 2,000-meter erg score. Nominees must be eligible student-athletes who have competed in their teams' varsity boat in 75 percent of races this season.
Â
These athletes will be eligible for All-America awards selection following the NCAA Rowing Championships.
