After three seasons, Brittany Anghel has established herself as one of the top goalkeepers in school history. As she prepares to open her senior campaign, the college soccer world is recognizing what Orange fans already know – that Anghel is one of the top players in the nation.
Last season Anghel posted a 1.02 goals-against average, which is the second-lowest single-season GAA in school history. She recorded 69 saves and five shutouts as she helped Syracuse post its first winning season since 2003. Anghel became the first player in school history to earn a conference player of the year award as she was named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year. In addition, she was voted to the All-BIG EAST First Team and to the ECAC All-Star squad.
While Anghel has been a known commodity at the conference level, she now is garnering national attention. Earlier this year TopDrawerSoccer.com named Anghel one of the nation's top 10 returning goalkeepers. Now the website has ranked Anghel the No. 87 on its list of top 100 players in the nation.
"Brittany has a willingness to learn and be coached, which is important for any athlete but especially for a goalkeeper," Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon said. "I think she has a drive to succeed. She's one of those players who won't give up on anything and that translates into the way she plays. She's become a more complete goalkeeper as far as her shot-stopping ability and also her leadership qualities within the team."
Anghel enters her senior season at the top of several career leader lists in Syracuse's record book. She ranks second in wins (22) and shutouts (18) and third in saves (225). In addition, her 1.23 career goals-against average is third on the career ledger. Anghel hopes that the Orange can take the next step this season and qualify for the NCAA Tournament. She knows she'll play a crucial role in making that happen.
"One of the things I definitely want to improve on is my communication skills," Anghel said. "Now, being a captain, I really have to work to get everybody on board. So it's not really about me. It's about communicating effectively and making sure we all have this common vision to do well and be successful in the ACC."
