SYRACUSE, N.Y. -Â Syracuse field hockey head coach has announced the addition of freshman goalkeeper Rebecca Congel to the Orange roster.
Â
"Rebecca is a very welcome addition to our goalkeeping squad," Bradley said. "I'm impressed with her size and ability. I think Rebecca can develop into a really fine goalkeeper for us."
Â
Congel, from Englewood, Colo., is a 2013 graduate of Cherry Creek High School where she led the Bruins to a state semifinal appearance as a senior in 2012. A four-year player, Congel played defense as a freshman before becoming a goalie as a sophomore and eventually became the starter as a senior for head coach Ashley Thompson.
Â
"I chose Syracuse because I wanted a school that would push me for success both academically and athletically," Congel said. "The community, drive and motivation all led me to Syracuse."
Â
Cherry Creek went 12-4 overall, including five shutouts and 9-3 in league play with Congel in goal in 2012.
Â
Congel played club field hockey for the Denver Field Hockey Club from 2011-12 for coach Kathy James. She was also a four-year lacrosse player at Cherry Creek, winning the state title in 2013.
Â
The daughter of Scott and Emily Congel, Rebecca lived in Manlius her first nine years before moving to Colorado.
The Orange opens the regular season on Aug. 30 vs. Quinnipiac in Hempstead, N.Y. and hosts its home opener at Coyne Stadium on Sept. 13 vs. Massachusetts. You can also follow Syracuse field hockey via social media: on Facebook at /SUFieldHockey and Twitter @CuseFH.
