Preparations for Syracuse women's soccer 2013 season are officially underway! The team reported to campus on Tuesday, Aug. 6 and held its first conditioning sessions on Wednesday, Aug. 7. Head coach Phil Wheddon's team is coming off a nine-win season in which the Orange qualified for post-season play for the second consecutive year.
Syracuse opens the 2013 campaign on Friday, Aug. 23 against Hofstra at the Penn State Invitational, giving the Orange just more than two weeks to prepare.
"The players have to come together and play as a unit," Wheddon said. "Team chemistry is an absolute priority. We have to be technically sharp and well organized both on the attack and defensively to compete with the teams on our schedule."
Senior Brittany Anghel will once again anchor Syracuse's defense. The 2012 BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year ranks second on SU's career shutouts list (18) and third in saves (225). Anghel will have an experienced back line playing in front of her in seniors Rachel Blum, Jackie Moriarty and sophomore Taylor Haenlin. Together, the unit helped Syracuse to a 1.02 goals-against average last season.
The Orange returns three of its top five scorers from last season's balanced offensive attack. Sophomore Jackie Firenze earned a spot on the BIG EAST's All-Rookie squad after posting four goals. Classmate Erin Simon also finished the year with four goals to go along with two assists, while junior Alexis Koval posted seven points last season. Overall, nine different players found the back of the net for SU in 2012.
Syracuse is looking to build on its success from the past two seasons. The Orange posted seven wins in 2011 and registered six BIG EAST wins, the most since 1998 and second-highest total in school history. Last season, Syracuse won nine games, its highest total in Wheddon's tenure with the Orange, and advanced to the conference tournament for the second consecutive year, the first time SU had accomplished the feat since 1999 and 2000.
After playing in the Penn State Invitational, the Orange hosts Albany on Friday, Aug. 30 in its home opener. Syracuse will travel to Charlottesville, Va. on Sept. 12 for its first ACC against the Cavaliers.
