SOUTH BEND, IND. - Syracuse and No. 7/4 Notre Dame were locked in a scoreless contest until three seconds remained when Sammy Scofield tallied the game's only goal off a free kick to lift the Fighting Irish to a 1-0 victory on Thursday, Sept. 19 at Alumni Stadium in South Bend, Ind.
Â
After SU goalie Brittany Anghel punched the ball away on Morgan Andrews free kick from 30 yards out, Brittany Von Rueden freed herself up and headed the ball towards the six-yard box, where Scofield was waiting to deposit her header into the back of the net.
Â
"This is the best 90-minute performance for a Syracuse team since I've been in charge," said head coach Phil Wheddon. "We took another nationally ranked program to the wire and had a great chance to win. I'm really pound of the players to be so organized and disciplined."
Â
The game against Notre Dame (7-1, 3-0 ACC) marked the third consecutive outing that the Orange (4-5, 0-3 ACC) have gone up against a nationally ranked foe. SU previously lost 3-0 games to then ranked No. 2 Virginia and No. 22 Virginia Tech.
Â
In the first half, the Fighting Irish were active early on, recording six shots, including two on goal. SU's first chance to score came in the 32nd minute when Maddie Damm's shot sailed wide off a Maddie Iozzi corner kick. The opening half would remain scoreless with neither team getting another good look.
Â
Notre Dame wasted little time to begin the second half, putting the ball on goal early and often once again. Anna Gilbertson hit the crossbar in the 52nd minute. Five minutes later, all three of Andrews' attempts were denied. The first two were blocked while Anghel snagged the last, a header from a corner kick.
Â
The Orange's only other shot on goal came less than 30 seconds later off the foot of Cecilla Borgstrom, however Kaela Little made the stop.
Andrews put another ball on Angel with less than five minutes to play, but the senior came up big again, turning away her fourth shot of the night to preserve a scoreless tie.
Throughout the course of the game, the Fighting Irish held a 19-4 shot advantage, including 12-2 in the final 45 minutes. Notre Dame also had eight corner kicks to just two for the Orange. Anghel finished with four saves and the defensive line saved a pair for the Orange while Little made two stops in goal.
Â
"We need to turn around and play like this again on Sunday and capitalize," said Wheddon. "I hope the community will come out and support the team."
Â
Syracuse will host its first ACC home game on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 12 p.m. when No. 18 Duke comes to town.
