SYRACUSE, N.Y. -Â Serra Degnan scored two of the Orange's four first-half goals that led No. 5 Syracuse field hockey (7-1) to a 4-0 shutout victory vs. defending national champion and sixth-ranked Princeton (4-2) on Sunday afternoon at J.S. Coyne Stadium. The win runs the Orange's home winning streak to 39 games, dating back to 2009.
Â
Degnan, a freshman from Wyoming, Pa., netted the first two goals of her collegiate career, while Leonie Geyer and Alyssa Manley also scored for Syracuse, which rebounded well from its first defeat of the season, 6-3 at No. 17 Boston College on Friday.
Â
The Orange used a dominating performance in the opening half, outshooting the Tigers, 8-2, and scoring all four goals between the 10th and 27th minutes.
Â
Geyer started the scoring in the 10th minutes when she took a pass on the right side of the circle from Lindsey Nerbonne, dribbled in and scored from a sharp angle. It was the reigning ACC Player of the Week's sixth goal of the season and ran her scoring streak to four-straight games.
Â
In the 19th minute, Princeton goalkeeper Anya Gersoff (6 saves) made the stop on a blast from the top of the circle off the stick of Jordan Page, but Degnan was there at the left post to stuff home the rebound for her first career goal, making it 2-0.
Â
Degnan struck again just 2:13 later when she tipped in a shot by Laura Hahnefeldt on a penalty corner, extending SU's lead to three.
Â
In the 27th minute, the Orange tacked on its fourth goal when Manley deflected home another Hahnefeldt shot on a penalty corner, making it 4-0.
Â
Sophomore Jess Jecko recorded her third shutout of the season with four saves, all coming in the second half as the Tigers upped their pressure on the Orange defense.
Â
For the game, Syracuse outshot Princeton, 12-9, and drew four penalty corners to the Tigers' two.
Â
This was the second straight shutout for the Orange over the Tigers, as SU won last season's meeting, 2-0, on Sept. 23 at Princeton. It was the Tigers' only loss of the year as they went on to win the national championship.
SU's 39-game home winning streak began after losing to Princeton, 3-2 in overtime on Sept. 6, 2009.
Â
Syracuse returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 28 when it heads to Albany to face No. 8 Princeton in a 3 p.m. game at Alumni Field. The Orange returns to Coyne Stadium on Oct. 5 for its first home ACC game when it hosts No. 4 Virginia at 1 p.m.
