
‘Cuse Drops Shootout With No. 8 FSU

The Orange produced its second best offensive outing of ACC play against Florida State
TALLAHASEE, Fla. – Syracuse's second best offensive effort of ACC play this season was not enough to down the No. 8 Florida State Seminoles as the Orange fell, 3-0 on Sunday afternoon. Syracuse finished with four players hitting above .300, however, the Seminole's lethal attack was successful on nearly 40% of its tries.
Orange Effort Falls Short
Syracuse hit .286 on the day against the No. 8 team in the country on Sunday afternoon. The hitting percentage was the highest 'Cuse has posted since its win against Wake Forest.
Gosia Wlaszczuk, Monika Salkute, Leah Levert and Stacey Smith all hit above .300 while Silvi Uattara recorded a team high, 11 kills. Smith hit .357 with seven kills and Salkute had six, hitting .312.
Combining for six kills on 16 tries with no errors was Wlaszczuk and Levert. Wlaszczuk had four kills on 10 attempts, hitting .400 while Levert had two kills on six attacks for a .333 average. Wlaszczuk assisted 24 of the Orange's 31 kills.
With the absence of Lindsay McCabe due to an upper body injury, Salkute filled the middle with three block assists. Lucie Guttakovskaia assisted on two blocks and Wlaszczuk assited on one and had a block of her own as well. Levert and Smith each tallied a block assist.
The Set-By-Set
The Orange matched up with FSU point-for-point to begin the match, however, with the score tied at 13 the Seminoles strung together a 5-1 run that created a lead 'Cuse couldn't overcome.
Syracuse was able to fight and pull within three but FSU wouldn't let up, as it won five of the final seven points to put away Syracuse, 25-19 in the first.
Florida State made its statement earlier in the second as a 5-0 run presented a 12-5 score to the Orange. Not long after its surge the Seminoles had another quick four-point burst to extend its lead to eight. Syracuse and Florida State then traded points until Syracuse fell, 25-15.
The Seminoles didn't change its game plan in the final stanza, jumping out to an eight point lead, holding a 15-7 score over the Orange. Syracuse attempted a comeback but was only able to go point-for-point with FSU, suffering a 25-17 loss in the third and completing the three-set sweep.
Home Finale
Syracuse wraps up its 2014 campaign against Virginia Tech on Wednesday, November 26 and Virginia on Friday, November 28. Both matches are slated for 7:00 PM with Senior Day scheduled for Friday. Lindsay McCabe, Melina Violas and Stacey Smith will be honored before the matchup with Cavaliers.
