Rhode Island Player of the Year Daniel Apajee headlines group
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Orange head coach Ian McIntyre announced three additions to the Syracuse men's soccer program on Wednesday, February 12. Danny Apajee, Patrick Castle and Spencer Kopko will join the squad in the fall of 2014 alongside Liam Callahan, Julian Buescher and Korab Syla who enrolled at Syracuse University in January.
"Our talented 2014 recruiting class adds immediate quality and depth to a strong group of returning players," said McIntyre. "I have enjoyed getting to know these fine young men and their families over the last year. Ultimately, we look to measure ourselves against the highest quality of opponent in the Atlantic Coast Conference and this group of young men will help us continue to move forward as a program."
The 2012 Rhode Island Gatorade Player of the Year, Apajee is ranked as the No. 76 player in the country by TopDrawerSoccer.com. In addition, he led the USSDA New England Revolution in scoring the past two seasons.
"Danny is a clever, tricky player who has the ability to evade defenders in the final third," said McIntyre. "He consistently finds himself in good goal-scoring positions and he is a terrific complement to our current crop of attacking players. Danny has the ability to make a quick transition into the college game and contribute important goals for our program."
Castle also brings a wealth of club and scholastic experience. In addition to playing goalkeeper for the Black Watch Premier Soccer Club, he also captained his Schuylerville High School (N.Y.) squad during his senior season. Castle was an all-state selection at Schuylerville and has been called into several U.S. Soccer National Training Centers over the past two years.
"Patrick was initially identified through our Syracuse University Camp Program and he continues to impress every time that we see him play," said McIntyre. "He has a real presence in the goal and he possesses the necessary drive and commitment to succeed here at Syracuse. I am looking forward to seeing Patrick further grow as a keeper within our competitive training environment."
Kopko is a physical defender for the USSDA Revolution Empire Academy. Ranked as the No. 7 player in New York by TopDrawerSoccer.com, he played an integral role for a U-16 Revolution Empire defense that competed in the U.S. Soccer Academy playoffs in 2013. He played his scholastic soccer at Ithaca High School (N.Y.).
"Spencer is an uncompromising, physical defender who has impressed for the Revolution Empire team," said McIntyre. "He is another player who has consistently excelled in our Syracuse ID camp environment and his quality, mental toughness and winning mentality will be a terrific addition to our team."
