Spring men's soccer schedule features seven matches.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Men's soccer coach Ian McIntyre released the teams' 2014 spring schedule on Friday, Feb.28. Throughout March and April the Orange will play seven matches, including four at home. The slate features former BIG EAST rivals St. John's as well as three additional Division I opponents, two pro clubs and the three-time defending junior-college national champions.
"The spring schedule has been created to really challenge our team and hopefully act as a springboard into the 2014 season," McIntyre said. "We have an opportunity to try some new things over the next few months and we will certainly be tested in our games. We should learn a great deal about our team and this will allow us to prepare correctly for another exciting, demanding fall schedule."
SU opens the spring season with three straight road matches, starting March 7 against the Rochester Rhinos of the United Soccer League (USL). Another road tilt follows on March 29 versus the North America Soccer League's (NASL) Ottawa Fury FC. The Orange concludes the road trip at St. John's on April 5. The Red Storm advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season before losing to Virginia.
SU wraps up its spring slate with a pair of home round-robin exhibitions. The Orange hosts Siena and Buffalo on April 12 and entertains Colgate and 2013 NJCAA national champion Herkimer County Community College (HCC) on April 15.
Syracuse returns the bulk of a roster that posted a 10-7-1 overall record in 2013. The squad features two All-ACC performers in forward Emil Ekblom and goalie Alex Bono. Ekblom led the Orange with 10 goals and 23 points last year. Bono posted 55 saves and recorded eight shutouts.
