SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse field hockey concluded its spring exhibition season on Saturday by going undefeated to win the Syracuse Spring Tournament at J.S. Coyne Stadium. The Orange went 3-0-1 on the day, beating Cornell in the title game.
"We allowed only three penalty corners on the day and had some great counter-attacking opportunities," head coach Ange Bradley said. "It was a great way for our kids to finish the spring by winning our tournament here on Coyne and beginning our new campaign for 2014 on our home field."
Syracuse outscored its opponents by a combined 10-1 on the day.
"I thought we started out really strong, lost it a little but finished strong and got the win at the end," sophomore All-American Alyssa Manley said.
The tournament consisted of 30-minute games played 11-on-11 on the full field. The four teams – Syracuse, Colgate, Cornell and Lafayette - played round robin games before being seeded based off those results with Lafayette and Colgate meeting in the third-place game and SU and Cornell meeting for the title.
The tournament put the final touches on what was a very successful spring campaign for the Orange, who finished last season 16-4 and ranked No. 2 in the country. The exhibition season provided returning student-athletes the opportunity to further develop their individual skills, while also working on team concepts and tactics, and improving fitness.
"We have grown so much from the beginning of the spring to now," Manley said. "Our movement and cutting have grown so much and we are working harder. It has given us a good base to build off and I am really excited to see what we can do in the fall."
Following the tournament, the team held its end of the year celebration where it honored its seniors and gave out the 2013 team awards.
