SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Head coach Phil Wheddon has announced three more student-athlete will join the Syracuse women's soccer program this fall. Christina Ly (Corning, N.Y.), Alexis Muraco (Manlius, N.Y.) and Rebecca Pongetti (Hamilton, Ontario) complete the Orange's 2014 recruiting class.
Ly was a five-year starter for the varsity squad at Corning Painted Post East High School. She led the team to the Section IV Class AA title and the New York state quarterfinals in 2012. She was a Section IV all-star in 2012 and 2013 and traveled to Italy in 2012 as part of that group's international tour. Ly and the Hawks were sectional finalists in 2013 and co-champions in 2011. That same year Corning claimed the STAC West title. Ly participated in ODP program in 2008 and 2009. She also plays for the Capital Soccer Club's Renegades team.
Muraco recorded 25 goals and 15 assists as a senior at Fayetteville-Manlius High School. She finished her career with 40 goals. She was named to the 2013 All-Central New York Counties League (CNYCL) First Team and is a two-time Class AA CNYCL American First Team selection. The Hornets were the Class AA CNYCL Co-League champions as well as the American League champions last season. Muraco is a two-time MVP of the Jamesville-Dewitt King of the Hill Tournament. She also has competed for the Syracuse Football Club, Empire United Soccer Academy, Syracuse Development Academy and the Syracuse Lady Knights.
Pongetti is a transfer from Louisiana State University where she played in 18 games as a freshman in 2013. The midfielder/defender appeared in six of LSU's shutouts last season and helped the Tigers' defensive unit post a 1.49 goals-against average. Pongetti competed in the 2012 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup for Team Canada, starting all four matches in group play as well as the quarterfinal match against North Korea. In addition, she helped the Canadian U17s win the silver medal at the CONCACAF Championship in 2012. She captained the Canadian U-15 national team in 2010. In addition, Pongetti led her Ontario Provincial team to a pair of gold medals in the U-14 and U-16 levels at the Canadian Soccer Association National All-Star Championships in 2009 and 2011, respectively. She trained with the Canadian EXCELeration U23 and U20 camps in the spring of 2013.
"We are excited to add more quality to our roster," Wheddon said. "Christina and Alexis add to our depth in a number of positions and to add a player of Rebecca's quality at this stage is fantastic. She will bring a wealth of experience to our team both on and off of the field. We look forward to bringing our squad together in August and to competing in our second season in the ACC."
The Orange kicks off the 2014 season at the Penn State Invitational where it will face Missouri on Friday, Aug. 22 and the host Nittany Lions on Sunday, Aug. 24.
