Skilton, New Zealand Advance at FIFA U-20 World Cup

Syracuse sophomore Stephanie Skilton (Auckland, New Zealand) and New Zealand have qualified for the knockout stage of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada. The Junior Football Ferns defeated Costa Rica, 3-0, to become the first New Zealand women's age-group side to advance past pool play in a FIFA Tournament.
Skilton opened the scoring for New Zealand in the 24th minute when she headed the ball into the net off a deep free kick from Katie Bowen. The Football Ferns added two more goals for the 3-0 final as they finished pool play with a 2-1-0 record.
New Zealand will now face Nigeria, winners of Group C, in the quarterfinals on Monday, August 18 in Moncton.
