GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Syracuse field hockey team has been picked to finish third, while the Orange's Kati Nearhouse and Alyssa Manley garnered Preseason All-ACC honors when the Atlantic Coast Conference announced its preseason field hockey coaches' poll and awards on Monday.
With just two points separating the top three teams in the coaches poll, North Carolina was picked first (31 points, 2 first-place votes), Duke was picked second (30 points, 3 first-place votes) and Syracuse was third (29 points, 1 first-place vote). Boston College (1 first-place vote) and Wake Forest tied for fourth with 16 points with Virginia (14) and newcomer Louisville (11) rounding out the poll.
Nearhouse, a transfer from Old Dominion, practiced with the team in 2013 while sitting out games per NCAA transfer rules. The rising redshirt-senior was a two-time All-Region and All-CAA performer at ODU in 2011 and 2012, earning second team All-America honors from the NFHCA as a sophomore in 2011. Nearhouse has accounted for 29 points on 11 goals and seven assists in her career.
Manley, a sophomore from Lititz, Pa., earns her first All-America honor in 2013, garnering third-team honors. She became a consistent two-way force for the Orange on the midfield line in 2013, contributing on both the offensive and defensive ends. The All-ACC second-teamer and ACC All-Tournament selection totaled 18 points on seven goals and four assists, while being a key member of the penalty corner units.
Head coach Ange Bradley's squad is coming off a 16-4 season in 2013 in which it went 4-2 in its inaugural ACC campaign, finishing second. The Orange finished the year ranked No. 2 in the final NFHCA Coaches Poll.
Along with Nearhouse and Manley, Syracuse returns starters Emma Russell (12g, 11a), Lauren Brooks (13g), Karlee Farr (8g), Serra Degnan (4g), Jordan Page (8a) and Jess Jecko (16-4, 1.66 goals-against average). The Orange also welcomes a talented and deep incoming class of 10 that are expected to make an immediate impact for the perennial top-5 ranked program.
