SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Defender Skylar Thomas and midfielder Nick Perea have been named captains of the Syracuse men's soccer team for the 2014 season. The senior leaders were elected in a vote by their teammates.
This is the second straight year the duo will serve as team co-captains after also sharing the role last year with classmate Chris Makowski. Thomas and Perea are the first SU players since Brad Peetoom in 2006 and 2007 to wear the captain's armband in consecutive seasons.
Thomas has played in 37 games during his Orange career. He has five career goals and has contributed to 17 clean sheets for the Syracuse defense during his tenure.
Perea has played 55 matches in his first three seasons, including all 18 in 2013. He ranked second on the team in minutes played (1,582) and scored three goals last season. In addition, Perea tallied the game-winning goal in the final seconds of the Orange's preseason matchup with No. 13 Akron last Friday. He has five goals and three assists in his career.
Thomas, Perea and their Orange teammates open the regular season this Friday, Aug. 29 against Niagara. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission is free.
