Skilton Leads New Zealand Past Paraguay

Stephanie Skilton was named Player of the Match in the FIFA U-20 World Cup opener.
Syracuse sophomore Stephanie Skilton played a part in both of New Zealand's goals in its 2-0 victory against Paraguay in the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Montreal on Wednesday, Aug. 6. She was named Player of the Match for her performance.
Skilton's play led to New Zealand's first goal in the 40th minute. She passed the ball to Emma Rolston on the right. Rolston stepped inside her defender and curled a shot just inside the post from the edge fo the box. Skilton then gave the Kiwis a 2-0 advantage in the 43rd minute. Katie Bowen chased down a ball and prevented it from going out of play. Her cross looped over the Paraguay goalkeeper to Skilton, who shot the ball into an open net to clinch the victory.
New Zealand, which is trying to advance fromt the group stage for the first time, will now face France. Both teams sit atop the Group D standings.
