SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The 20th-ranked Orange (4-1-0) steps back out of conference when it welcomes Central New York neighbor Cornell (2-1-1) to the SU Soccer Stadium on Tuesday, Sept. 16 for a 7 p.m. match. Cornell is riding a two-game winning streak after starting the year 0-1-1 in its first two matches. The Orange lost for the first time this season, 1-0, to No. 4 Notre Dame over the weekend.
Admission for all Syracuse soccer matches is free. Tuesday's game will be televised live locally on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel and streamed live nationally on ESPN3.
FAMILIAR FACE
Sixth-year Cornell head coach Jaro Zawislan is making his second trip back to Syracuse after serving as the Orange's assistant coach from 2002 to 2008. While with the Orange, Zawislan tutored the goalies and was an integral part of the Orange's recruiting success, helping bring previous standouts like Richard Asante, Kyle Hall and Robert Cavicchia to Syracuse.
The Orange is 2-0-1 against the Big Red since Zawislan accepted the Cornell head coaching reins. SU topped Cornell, 2-1, in Zawislan's first trip back to Syracuse in 2009. The Orange also eliminated the Big Red, 1-0, in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Championship. The victory marked SU's first-ever NCAA Tournament win.
ATTACKING MINDSET
SU has outshot its foes by an 80-38 margin this year, an average of 16 shots per game to 7.6. In addition, Syracuse has been awarded a whopping 63 corner kicks. Its average of 12.6 corner kicks per contest is more than double any other team in the ACC.
SU is tied with Boston College and Clemson for third in the ACC with eight goals scored.
BONO'S IMPRESSIVE STREAK
Individual goalie minute have been logged at Syracuse since 1986. Since that season, goalie Alex Bono's streak of 434:05 without allowing a goal to start 2014 is the second-longest on record. The stretch included four straight shutouts to open the year before Notre Dame's Brandon Aubrey snapped the streak with his goal in the 75th minute Saturday.
Bono has two of the four longest shutout streaks in school history. He blanked opponents for 415:20 during his 2012 rookie season.
Chris Whitcomb's streak of 461:59 without conceding a goal in 1986 is the Syracuse record.
SCOUTING THE BIG RED
The Big Red is 2-1-1 on the season. Cornell has rebounded from an 0-1-1 start with consecutive 1-nil shutouts of Lafayette and Binghamton.
Conor Goepel has both Cornell goals this season. Peter Chodas, Ralph Lee Price IV and Chris St. Germain each have one assist.
Senior goalie Zach Zagorski has recorded three clean sheets in 2014, allowing his only goal of the year in a 1-0 loss to Xavier.
THE CORNELL SERIES
The Orange has a long history with the Big Red as the two teams met for the first time in 1921. Cornell owns a 34-26-7 advantage in the series, but the Orange has gotten the better of the Big Red recently. Syracuse has won eight of the last 10 pairings, including five in a row from 2002 to 2009. The last meeting was the aforementioned NCAA Tournament pairing, won by Syracuse on a goal by Lars Muller in the 10th minute.
UP NEXT ...
Syracuse makes its first-ever trip to Clemson on Saturday, Sept. 20. The Orange and Tigers will kick off at 5 p.m. at Riggs Field.
