Julian Buescher posts his first multiple-goal match of his career.
DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore Julian Buescher scored twice to lead the rv/-- Syracuse men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory at Duke on Saturday, Oct. 2. The win extended the Orange's winning streak to four and improved its record to 7-2-1, 2-1-1 in ACC play.
Â
The match was played in rainy and windy conditions thanks to Hurricane Joaquin, but the field conditions didn't slow Syracuse down. The Orange opened the scoring in the 26th minute when Buescher hit his shot by Duke goalkeeper Wilson Fisher off a give-and-go with redshirt junior Liam Callahan. Syracuse went up 2-0 with just 20 seconds remaining in the half. The Orange served the ball into the box from the right side where it eventually went off a Duke player's shin and into the back of the net for an own goal.
Â
Syracuse quickly extended its lead 59 seconds into the second half. Buescher netted his second goal of the night on assists from Callahan and senior Juuso Pasanen for the first multiple-goal match of his career. Duke was more dangerous in the second half and was awarded a penalty kick when the Orange was called for a foul on a corner kick in the 77th minute. Zach Mathers converted on the attempt for the 3-1 final.
Â
"It was a good performance and an important three points in the ACC," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "We started well and played very good attacking soccer in the first half. We limited Duke, which is a very dynamic team, and kept its very exciting players on attack quiet. The goal right before the half was key because the conditions were deteriorating. The goal right after halftime gave us the cushion we needed. After that is was a territorial battle and we stood up to the challenge."
Â
Syracuse outshot Duke, 11-7, and earned six corner kicks to three for Duke. Freshman goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert made his first appearance for the Orange this season and recorded one save for his first career victory.
Â
The Orange will put its winning streak on the line on Tuesday, Oct. 6 when it hosts Albany at the SU Soccer Stadium at 7 p.m.
