SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse women's soccer team battled No. 6/7 Clemson for the entirety of Saturday's match, but were unable to find the back of the net, losing to the Tigers by a final score of 1-0. Before the contest, the Orange honored its senior class at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Â
Syracuse (7-11-1, 3-7 ACC) gave tribute to its five departing seniors before its game against Clemson (13-3-1, 7-3 ACC). Seniors Jackie Firenze, Alexis Koval, Maya Pitts, Erin Simon as well as junior Blake Johnson were all honored for their contributions over the past four years for the Orange women's soccer program.
Â
"I am really proud of our team's effort. We had so many close opportunities," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "I thought we could have got one back, but I thought we did really well and I am very proud of our players."
Â
With the loss, Syracuse had its three-game winning streak snapped, as Jenna Weston scored the lone goal for Clemson in the 15th minute that eventually led the Tigers to the victory.
Â
Despite getting outshot 9-1 in the first half, the Orange dominated the second half of play, registering eight shots compared to one from the Tigers. The Tigers finished the contest with 10 shots while the Orange had nine. Sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan finished with seven saves.
Â
The Orange had numerous scoring opportunities, but failed to put anything past Clemson goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan. Koval nearly had the equalizer in the late moments of the second half, but Sheridan came up big on her line to keep Syracuse scoreless.
Â
Weston scored the only goal of the game in the 15th minute, beating Brosnan with a header off a cross from Samantha Staab. Despite dominating possession in a chippy contest for majority of the game, Syracuse was denied any scoring chance.
