SYRACUSE, N.Y – The No. 19/25 Syracuse University women's basketball team lost to No. 24/24 Arizona State, 61-54, on Saturday afternoon in the Carrier Dome. Arizona State snapped Syracuse's 72-game non-conference home win streak, which was the longest in the nation.
Â
"I knew coming into this game, both teams understood what the urgency was in winning this basketball game," head coach Quentin Hillsman stated. "Arizona State played a tremendous game, I give them a lot of credit. This wasn't our night, but it wasn't our night because Arizona State made it not our night. I have got to give them a ton of credit, they did an excellent job."
Â
Arizona State (5-3, 0-0) hit back-to-back 3-point field goals at the end of the second quarter and Syracuse (6-3, 0-0) would not lead for the rest of the contest. The Orange got within five points with less than two minutes remaining, but could not overtake the Sun Devils on Saturday.
Â
The Sun Devils owned a significant advantage in the rebounding department. Arizona State outrebounded Syracuse, 44-23. In addition, the ASU defense had its clamps on the SU offense, holding the Orange to a season-low 54 points.
Â
Junior guard Alexis Peterson led the team with 15 points on the day. It marked her eighth straight game with at least 10 points. In addition, it was the 20th time in her collegiate career she led the squad in scoring.
Â
Senior guard Brianna Butler scored 13 points against Arizona State. Butler now has 1,261 points in her collegiate career, which ranks 10th in program history. The King of Prussia, Pa. native passed Paula Moore with a jumper at the 4:30 mark in the fourth quarter.
