Â
Syracuse is coming off a 61-54 loss against No. 24/24 Arizona State on Dec. 12. Junior guard Alexis Peterson scored a team-high 15 points in the loss, pacing the squad in scoring for the fifth time in 2015-16.
Â
Jacksonville enters Monday night's contest with a 6-5 overall record. The Dolphins have splits their last two contests, dropping a 57-51 decision at Wake Forest on Dec. 14 before bouncing back with a 79-54 victory against Murray State on Dec. 17.
Â
Pressure Defense
Under head coach Quentin Hillsman, Syracuse has constantly applied pressure with its full-court pressure defense. The effects of this defense could not be more evident than its amount of steals per game. Currently, the Orange ranks first in the Atlantic Coast Conference and sixth in the country with 13.0 steals per game.
Â
Similar to last season, junior guard Alexis Peterson and senior guard Cornelia Fondren are leading the charge in that front. Peterson currently ranks second in the ACC and 15th nationally with 3.22 steals per game. Fondren averages 2.44 steals per contest, which ranks seventh in the league and 81st in the country.
Â
In the season opener at Rhode Island on Nov. 13, Peterson put on one of the best defensive displays in program history. The Columbus, Ohio native recorded 10 steals on the night, setting a Syracuse single-game record. Janice Long held the previous record, recording nine steals against Iona on Jan. 15, 1984.
Â
Last Time Out
Syracuse lost to No. 24/24 Arizona State, 61-54, on Dec. 12 in the Carrier Dome. Arizona State snapped Syracuse's 72-game non-conference home win streak, which was the longest in the nation.
Â
Arizona State hit back-to-back 3-point field goals at the end of the second quarter and Syracuse would not lead for the rest of the contest. The Orange got within five points with less than two minutes remaining, but could not overtake the Sun Devils.
Â
Junior guard Alexis Peterson led the team with 15 points on the day. It marked her eighth straight game with at least 10 points. In addition, it was the 20th time in her collegiate career she led the squad in scoring.
Â
Senior guard Brianna Butler scored 13 points against Arizona State. Butler now has 1,261 points in her collegiate career, which ranks 10th in program history. The King of Prussia, Pa. native passed Paula Moore with a jumper at the 4:30 mark in the fourth quarter.
