Butler moves into 11th place on the SU all-time scoring list
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 20/25 Syracuse University women's basketball lost at No. 5/5 Maryland in the 2015 Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Wednesday night at the XFINITY Center. It marked Syracuse's second loss of the 2015-16 season.
Â
"You have to give Maryland a ton of credit," head coach Quentin Hillsman stated. "They really came out tough and dominated the game early. There was times when we cut the lead to eight and just didn't make plays. We just didn't turn the corner."
Â
After not trailing at any point in its two previous games at the South Point Shootout in Las Vegas, Syracuse (4-2, 0-0) never led against Maryland (7-0, 0-0) on Wednesday night. A 9-0 run put the Terrapins up 10 points at the end of the first quarter, and ultimately the Orange could never get closer than four points.
Â
Maryland was an impressive 51 percent from the field, making 32-of-62 field goal attempts. The Terps also dominated the boards, holding a 55-31 advantage.
Â
Senior guard Brianna Butler scored a season-best 22 points on the night. It marked her 11th 20-point game of her collegiate career, which leads all Syracuse players. In addition, Butler moved up three spots on the Orange all-time career scoring list on the night, and now has 1,231 points in her career. She now ranks 11th in program history in career points scored.
Â
Junior guard Alexis Peterson finished in double figures for the fifth straight contest. Peterson finished with 14 points, four assists, and two steals on the night.
Classmate Briana Day was one rebound shy of her first double-double of the 2015-16 season. The junior center recorded 10 points and nine boards on the night.
Â
Syracuse returns to action on Sunday afternoon when it hosts in-state opponent Stony Brook. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. The game will be broadcast on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel and ESPN3.
Tickets can be purchased online, by phone at 1-888-DOMETIX, or by visiting the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B) during normal business hours.
