Vote for the Top Field Hockey Play of 2015
12/28/2015 1:12:00 PM | Field Hockey
The 2015 season was a remarkable one for the Syracuse field hockey team. The Orange earned the program's first National Championship – and first national title by any women's program in Syracuse University history – after running the table in the regular season.
In a season full of incredible plays, CuseTV has narrowed down the list to five nominees for the play of the year in 2015, with a fan vote to decide the team's best play. Fans can submit their choice of play 1-5, as shown in the accompanying video to @CuseFH on Twitter to decide the winner.
Play 1:
Who: Senior goalkeeper Jess Jecko
When: National Championship Game vs. North Carolina
Where: Ann Arbor, Michigan
What: Following Emma Lamison's empty-net goal to push the Syracuse lead to 4-2 in the waning moments of the title game, the Tar Heels upped their attack with a strong push on the Syracuse net. After drawing a penalty stroke, North Carolina looked to pull within one with just-over one minute to play in regulation. However, Jecko wouldn't let it get that far, stone-walling Carolina standout Nina Notman to seal the win and the National Championship for the Orange.
Play 2:
Who: Senior midfielder Alma Fenne
When: ACC Semifinal vs. Virginia
Where: Charlottesville, Virginia
What: In her only season with the Orange, midfielder Alma Fenne had some incredible plays – she's found her way into the year-end play of the year voting three times – with one of her most incredible plays coming in the ACC semifinal at Virginia. Early in the contest, Fenne struck a hard backhand shot that stunned Cavaliers' goalkeeper Rebecca Holden and gave the Orange a 1-0 lead in a game that they'd go on to win 3-2 in overtime. Fenne beat Holden near post, chipping the ball into a tiny window and off the inside post for the first score of the game.
Play 3:
Who: Senior midfielder Emma Russell
When: NCAA Semifinal vs. UConn
Where: Ann Arbor, Michigan
What: In order to avenge its only loss of the 2015 season against North Carolina, the Orange first had to get there by defeating UConn in a rematch of the 2014 NCAA title game. The Orange came out of the gate firing, scoring twice in the opening 20-minutes. Emma Russell drove baseline carrying the ball on her stick the entire way, beating two defenders before swatting it out of the air for the score to put 'Cuse up 2-0. The Orange would go on to win 3-1 to play for the title.
Play 4:
Who: Senior midfielder Alma Fenne
When: Syracuse vs. Virginia (Sept. 25)
Where: J.S. Coyne Stadium, Syracuse, N.Y.
What: In one-of-many battles between top-five teams this season, Syracuse welcomed Virginia to J.S. Coyne Stadium in its second ACC contest of the year. It was another close battle for the Orange, with Fenne having another moment where she took control of the game. Fenne took the ball from 30 yards out, beat her defender and drove into the circle, firing a low shot into the corner of the cage for the score in a game Syracuse went onto win 3-1.
Play 5:
Who: Senior midfielder Alma Fenne
When: NCAA Semifinal vs. UConn
What: Sometimes the best plays come out of unlikely situations. After the Orange drew a corner less than two minutes into the game, 'Cuse mishandled the initial play, seemingly spoiling the game's first opportunity. Only Fenne wouldn't allow that to happen. The midfielder collected the ball, drove into the circle and blasted a shot past the Huskies' defense, setting the tone for the Orange just two minutes into the national semifinal and pushing 'Cuse back into the NCAA title game.
