The Orange took down Tennessee Chattanooga and Hartford
CLEARWATER, Fla. – Syracuse (11-14) received a strong effort from its pitching staff to fend off Tennessee Chattanooga (15-7) in a 4-2 victory and Hartford (1-13) in a 2-1 pitcher's duel.
"I thought our pitchers did a great job battling through at-bats and never giving in to their opponent," Coach Bosch said of his pitching staff's performance Saturday night. "I thought Joc (Jocelyn Cater) was outstanding tonight. She struck out 16 with a very tight zone and pitched her way out of some tough situations. Then to have Lindsay Taylor and Lindsey Larkin come in game two and shut down Hartford... That was huge for them and this team."
The Highlights Against Tennessee Chattanooga
Fourth Inning Rally Tops Tennessee Chattanooga
After walking the first batter of the game, Cater rolled through the rest of the inning, striking out two and getting a nice play by Chitkowski at third for an out in between. In the bottom of the inning Doane sent a slow roller down the third base line for an infield single, but the rushed throw sailed to the fence allowing her to advance to second. With two down, Wambold rocketed a hanging changeup to left for a ground-rule double to score Syracuse's first run of the ball game.
Tennessee Chattanooga threatened in the second with runners on the corners and one down, but Cater denied the Mocs of any offensive production, striking out the next two to end the inning. Following a one-two-three inning thrown by Cater in the third, Tennessee Chattanooga managed to grab two runs with a bases loaded two-out walk and a passed ball.
Syracuse answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring three to reclaim the lead. Toczynski was hit by a pitch with one out and Chitkowski followed with a single to right, giving Dewes runners on first and second. After a wild pitch allowed the runners to advance to second and third, Dewes singled to center to bring them in, giving 'Cuse a 3-2 lead. Doane added the fourth run, scoring Dewes with a double to center.
The Mocs threatened with the bases loaded in the fifth, a runner on second in the sixth and runners on first and second in the seventh but Cater was able to hold them scoreless the rest of the way to solidify the 4-2 victory.
The Highlights Against Hartford
Larkin Stifles The Hawks
Taylor got the nod for the first time this season and opened with a scoreless first but after two singles and two errors in between, Hartford managed to score an unearned run. However with the bases loaded, Taylor was able to get the next out swinging and a ground out to end the inning and hold Hartford to the one run.
In the bottom of the second, Chitkowski sent an RBI single to left to score Wambold after she led off with a walk and O'Hara singled through the left side. Dewes later singled to right to score the go-ahead run and take a 2-1 lead.
Due to working on a pitch count, Larkin came in to relieve Taylor and she did not disappoint. She slammed the door, allowing just one hit and one walk and her infielders played well behind her, recording 10 ground ball outs to solidify the 2-1 victory.
