Martin Hehir, Max Straneva and Reed Kamyszek earn the award
The Syracuse men's cross country team was well represented on the Capital One Track and Field/Cross Country Academic All-District team, with Martin Hehir, Reed Kamyszek and Max Straneva each earning the honor.
It's Hehir's third time earning All-District honors after making it each of the last-three years, while Reed Kamyszek is a two-time recipient, having previously earned the honor in the 2012-13 season.
The 'Cuse trio occupied a large portion of the 10-person team in District 1, which encompasses schools in the northeast, in the latest honors for a program which experienced one of its best seasons in school history.
The cross country squad raced to a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships – its best finish in over 50-years at the meet – after taking home its second-straight ACC Championship (which was the fifth conference title in the last six seasons for the Orange) and peaking at a program-best No. 2 in the USTFCCCA poll. The track team also peaked at No. 19 this season, which was its first time ranked inside of the top-20.
Hehir, who earned All-District honors last season as well, was a USTFCCCA All-American in both cross country and indoor track this season, and currently has one of the nation's best times in both the 10,000 (2nd) 5,000-meters (8th) heading into next week's NCAA East Regional.
Hehir was the ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year in both cross country and indoor track, and earned an ACC Individual Championship in both seasons as well, taking gold at the ACC Cross Country Championship in October and winning the 5,000-meters at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships in March.
The Washingtonville, N.Y. native was a Doris Soladay Award Nominee at the ninth-annual 'Cuse Awards, which is considered the top-award a Syracuse student-athlete can receive. He also took home Male Performance of the Year for his race at the cross country championships as well as MVP honors for both cross country and track.
Hehir is a double-major in biology and Spanish language, literature and culture, who earned his degree in each at Syracuse's commencement festivities two weeks ago but will return for next year's cross country season as he still has eligibility remaining.
Kamyszek, a recipient of the Elite 89 Award at last year's NCAA Cross Country Championships – an award presented to the person with the highest GPA competing at each of the NCAA's 89 Championships – earned degrees in biochemistry, ethics and psychology this spring.
The Grand Rapids, Michigan native has the 11th-best time in the 10k heading into this weekend's NCAA East Regional and is coming off a fifth-place performance in the event at last weekend's ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Kamyszek will be enrolling in medical school in the fall.
Straneva also medaled at the ACC Cross Country Championships, racing to a bronze medal in Charlottesville, Virginia this October. He also posted a fifth-place finish in the 5,000-meters at the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships last weekend.
The Binghamton, New York native earned his degree in health and exercise science at Syracuse's commencement this spring.
The trio is now up for the Capital One Academic All-America Team, which are selected from a pool of the eight district's winners.
