Bono Makes MLS Debut

Former Orange star named TFC Man of the Match versus Manchester City
TORONTO – Former Syracuse University men's soccer star Alex Bono made his Major League Soccer (MLS) debut in last night's friendly between Toronto FC and English Premier League runner-up Manchester City at BMO Field.

Bono, who was selected sixth overall by Toronto in this year's MLS SuperDraft, replaced starting keeper Joe Bendik in the 30th minute. The rookie made his presence felt immediately, recording several saves to earn TFC Man of the Match honors. Among the highlights was a point-blank stop on Spanish superstar David Silva in the second half to keep the game scoreless.
Manchester City eventually secured a 1-0 victory on a brilliant goal by George Evans in the 84th minute. Â
One of the most accomplished players in Syracuse history, Bono left the Orange after three years to turn pro. Â He finished his collegiate career with a 39-17-3 record in 59 starts and led the Orange to two NCAA Tournament appearances. Bono ranks in the top 10 in every career goalkeeping category at Syracuse and he is the program's career leader in goals-against average (0.80).
A 2014 NSCAA First Team All-American and MAC Hermann Trophy finalist, Bono has spent most of his first professional season with TFC II, Toronto's United Soccer League (USL) affiliate.
